Texas Rangers overwhelm the Seattle Mariners by 5-3 –MLB Update
The Texas Rangers made a comeback on Thursday, April 12, to beat the Seattle Mariners by 5-3. After losing the last game 4-3, the Rangers had Derek Holland at their disposal on Thursday to finish off the four-game series 3-1.
Derek Holland, the team’s incredibly accomplished starter, went for 7.1 strong innings to dismantle the Seattle Mariners’ offence. With majestic effectiveness, the pitcher went for eight strike-outs, allowing only five hits and conceding two runs.
The runs came in the sixth and seventh inning when A. Liddi scored an RBI single and K. Seager hit a homer to bring down the Texas Rangers lead to 3-2. It was Michael Young who had scored a single in the first and then a two-run homer in the fifth to give the Rangers the needed lead.
Texas Rangers’ hitters went aggressively against Jason Vargas who threw 6.2 innings, allowing four runs and giving up seven hits. Michael Young scored a single in the seventh that gave the Rangers a 5-2 lead.
But, in effect, it was Derek Holland who prevailed over the Mariners hitters in Thursday’s game. Holland had lost his last start, something that he could not afford to repeat here. Much to his satisfaction, that did not quite happen.
"I'm not going to worry too much about a previous game," Holland said. "My mentality is I want to be the starter and the closer. I always try to go out there and go as long as I can."
The sixth and seventh inning could have been a bit of challenge for Holland, but he managed both of them well.
"When he got into the sixth inning, he started elevating his pitches," Rangers manager Ron Washington said. "He fought through the seventh, and it looked like he might get us three outs in the eighth but it didn't work out."
It was Miguel Olivo who tried to make a comeback in the game with his one-run double Mike Adams on the pitching mound, but the closer did not allow any other hitter to go for run to wrap up the game with 5-3 victory.
