Texas Rangers pitcher Colby Lewis has another bad day
Leading up to three straight game victories by the Texas Rangers at home, one would have thought the club is looking to extend its lead in the American League West.
Unfortunately, the travelling Toronto Blue Jays were not adhering to the hosts, as they clobbered them in their first outing of the series to lead the tally with one run.
For the Texans, it was another bad day at work. Colby Lewis moved to a third defeat of the season.
The first game in Arlington looked to be a stalemate in the fourth inning. Both teams were nil on the scoreboard and it looked as if nothing would happen till late in the innings. That was when Lewis fumbled terribly. The ace allowed six strong runs in the
top fifth to the Blue Jays. His troubles were worsened by two very painful walks.
Travis Snider came on to leadoff against Lewis. The hitter was .167 heading into the game and he got the first walk. The pitcher then got two hitters retired. Yunel Escobar came in to single to the left.
With two bases occupied, the hurler got Corey Patterson to swing at two pitches. Needing just one more miss, he pitched a fastball. Unfortunately, it was not the ball thrower’s day as the Blue Jays man smashed a homer to lead the team three points up.
"We wanted to elevate it", Lewis said. "It was up in his eyes and he stayed on top it. Sometimes it goes your way and sometimes it doesn't".
The situation would worsen as the pitcher conceded three more runs.
"One bad inning", Lewis said.
It looked like things would settle down now. Going four innings without a concession looked good for Lewis and it was a sign.
"I felt great", Lewis said. "I felt like I had the best stuff I've had all year. I'll take what I did the first four innings and go from there".
With Jose Bautista coming in after the three home run shot by Patterson, Lewis again faltered with his pitch. Bautista punished him with a home run.
"I threw a good first-pitch slider for a strike to Bautista", Lewis said. "Apparently he was sitting on it".
Eventually, the hurler walked Adam Lind, after which Juan Rivera came in to hit a two run home run, leading the Blue Jays to a decisive 6–4 victory.
