Texas Rangers place a variety of offers in front of Cliff Lee
It seems the New York Yankees have nothing to lose now, since Carl Crawford signed on with the Boston Red Sox. Their offer of $140 million for Cliff Lee signalled an all out bidding war and CEO of the Texas Rangers, Chuck Greenberg, sees this as a dangerous
game to get sunk in. The top man in the Texan clubhouse was quick on his feet and he paid Lee a visit at his agent’s office, in Arkansas. He led a delegation of Co-Chairman, Ray Davis and Assistant General Manager, Thad Levine to Darek Braunecker’s office.
There Lee and his wife, Kristen, took part in a healthy discussion. The Rangers offered Lee and his agent a variety of offers and though there were no details on the proceedings, it appears both parties were satisfied. Greenberg iterated that the team is
willing to wait for Cliff’s decision and expressed how important he was to the roster.
"In terms of the timeline, that is always in the control of the player," Chuck Greenberg said. "Certainly, we would rather this be concluded sooner than later, but this is an enormous decision that Cliff and Kristen have to make on behalf of their family.
And particularly here where our ballclub is in their back yard, obviously there is a substantial choice to make in terms of lifestyle. We certainly understand and encourage them to take the time that they need in order to make a decision that they're comfortable
with."
Lee was a big part of the Rangers’ campaign, last season. He featured in 5 playoff encounters and got the side to 3 important wins. Those victories led Texas to an important American League Championship triumph. It also led to the team’s first appearance
in the World Series. Greenberg is aware of his significance and is willing to wait for the player to come out with a crucial decision.
"We felt very good," said Greenberg. "It's a very important decision that they're going to be making as a family, and we wanted to put our best foot forward in a responsible fashion to make the case in terms of competing for championships, lifestyle and
economics as compelling as possible. I think we did that to the best of our abilities. I believe that we made an impression on them, and it will be up to them to determine how to weigh the choices between ourselves and other interested clubs."
