Texas Rangers to retain Koji Uehara – MLB News
The Texas Rangers’ general manager Jon Daniels on Tuesday, February 21, refuted the suggestions that the club intends to trade Koji Uehara at this point in time. The Rangers are currently bracing themselves for Spring Training which shall kick off on February
29.
Daniels who spoke to the media on Tuesday commented that he had no plans to have a changed group for now.
"There are always some deals in the spring, moves here or there," Daniels said Tuesday. "But we're ready to go with this group of guys. I have no moves planned or anything like that."
Uehara’s role is to be as a setup reliever once the season starts. However, there were some talks earlier that the club might have been thinking to trade the player. Nonetheless, Uehara came in the Rangers acquisition only last year.
Rangers had decided to trade their first baseman Chris Davis and pitcher Tommy Hunter with Uehara who at the time was a Baltimore Orioles player back then.
With two years experience to his credit, the 6-1 player has so far had a good career average of 3.13 in 120 games that he has appeared, having had a total of 12 starts. The player had a good 2011 season as well.
He won a total of two games with a 2.35 ERA, having had 85 strike-outs to his credit. With the performance that was satisfactory, Daniels lauded the player, calling his last year as a very good one for him as a whole.
"The guy had a tremendous year last year," Daniels said. "One of the attractive things about trading for Koji last year was he was not just a rental. He was a two-year fit. That was an attractive element to the deal and still is."
What remains the source of strength for the Texas Rangers, among others, is the strong defence line-up. From the accomplished and ace starters to the best relievers and capable closers, everything goes to their advantage. It remains to be seen where Koji
Uehara fits in once the Major League Baseball season formally starts in April.
