Question:

Texas hold'em - What do the rules say?

We had encountered a problem while playing poker. We started to play 4 months ago.

We play texas hold'em, and we don't have a limit on the number of "rebuys" that a player may do.

This creates 2 problems:

1. Inequality of the game - some people spend more money than others, thus have more chance to win (statistically, they do more rebuys so they enter more rounds.

2.Inability to threat - most of the guys don't have a problem to draw infinite amount of money so they do rebuy after rebuy, so they don't get scared because they'll just draw more money in case they lose.

So I wanted to know what the rules say. For example, in Vegas, what happens in the poker rooms? because it doesn't seem logical to me that one Bill Gates will sit next to a regular paid guy and they play each by his capability - because

then Mr. Gates will have an advantage (will do more and more rebuys until he wins. he enters the game with an advantage). So what do the rules say?

  1. There are infinite scenerios for this.  There is no set standard rule for this...it would be considered a house rule...meaning if you decide to play unlimited rebuys...that is the official rule.

You didn't state whether or not you're playing a cash game or a tournament style.  If it's cash games then, it is to your advantage that someone keeps buying in.  It means there is more money on the table for you to win.

If it is a tournament style, I would definitely set a rebuy limit.  At our games we have it set up so people can rebuy in once...and only after they lose all their chips.

Anyway, if you don't think it's working, the best you can do is suggest an alternative or find somewhere else to play.

  2. most games only have 2 or 3 tops on rebuys, it's very rare to have unlimited rebuys in a game.

  3. This depends on whether you are playing a tournament or a ring/cash game.  Most tournaments are of the non-rebuy format.  In other words, once you lose all of your chips, you're out.

In most rebuy tournaments players are usually allowed to make unlimited rebuys up to a certain point in the tournament.  Rebuys are usually only allowed when a player drops below a certain chip count.

In ring/cash games, a player is allowed to rebuy as many times as he/she wants.  There is no rule limiting the number of rebuys a person can make.  Some casinos, however, have cash games with a maximum buy-in.  As an example, a casino may have a no limit hold em with a maximum $400 buy-in.  Players are only allowed to rebuy for $400 at a time and only when they drop below a certain chip count.  This prevents the ultra-rich guy from sitting down with $2,000,000 and running over the table.

If your group is playing a cash/ring game you can limit the buy-in/rebuys to a certain amount and only allow rebuys when you drop below a certain chip count.  This will not prevent the rich maniac from going all-in all the and then rebuying.  But it will slow him/her down a little.
