Who would win:

- I had a flush (7,8,9,10,J) and also a pair of 9

- and my cousin had a higher flush than me (8,9,10,J,Q)

so who would actually win that round?

  1. Texas holdem has nothing to do with what 7 cards you hold.  It is about what are the best 5 cards you can play.  The person with the higher flush is the winner.

  2. The rule is simple and clear: "Play your best five cards".

In this case, the pair of 9s doesn't count, because your best 5 are the straight.

  3. Your cousin won the hand, because you are trying to make the best 5 card hand and a queen high straight is better than a jack high straight. The 9's don't factor in.

  4. he would. higher flush....

  5. You have to play your best 5 card hand.  Any other cards are not used.

Since your cousin had the Q-high flush to your J-high flush, he wins.  Your pair of 9's does not come into play in any way, shape or form.

  6. your cousin, the higher straight wins

  7. Unless all the cards were suited, neither of you had a flush.  If they were the same suit, you both had a straight flush.  They look more like straights to me though.

If you use your pair, then all you have is a pair.  you can't play more than 5 cards, so it is impossible to have a straight and a pair both in the same hand in Texas Hold 'em.
