Not from Houston, but I am from Texas.  I vote homeschooling all the way.  Texas is a GREAT state to homeschool in.  Here's some info on the history/homeschool laws:

Having a group can be very beneficial. You can meet with people locally to answer questions. But these sites are a good start!

My kids were home schooled. My observation is that if the kid really really WANTS an education, really wants to learn what they can and get a good start then home schooling is a superior opportunity and will net excellent results. If the kid is rebellious and school or education is something that is forced on them for their own good them home school won't work. All up the kid really. Good Luck.
