Text competition entries - do they need a space between the 'word' and the a, b, or c answer?

If I am entering a competition by SMS and it says "text 'GADGET' followed by a, b or c" does it mean literally that or do I have to put a space between the two?

how do these systems work?

if I put a space, and they don't require one, will my entry not be detected?
