Text messaging in Cancun?

Question

My son is going to Cancun with a bunch of his friends, and we are wondering if it will cost more for them to text message each other (while in Cancun) than the normal rate? In other words, they will all be in Cancun, but may break off in groups to go separate places. My son has a text plan for 1500 messages per month, but will it cost him more to text while in Cancun, even to other people in Cancun?

Your son has a much better option (which you will like better as well). Rent a pair of phones from Mexitel Cellular. Why? Because it will cost the same 50 cents to call the other phone (and talk for up to 20 minutes) as it will just to send a text message in Mexico. And they will be sure to work there (where US roaming may or may not - you can never tell before you get there). Most of all - for $1 (for the entire call), your son will be able to call you in the US from Mexico - and you will be able to call him - and that call won't cost him anything at all.

ATT practically has service everywhere.

The phone might change to Telcel GSM.

If he is roaming while over there he will be charged 50cents per txt message he sends and receives.

I have nextel, and didn't have to pay any extra to text but my phone did not work at all.
