You would need a phone number to send a text message unless you are doing it online.

Texts are sent from a cell phone number that needs to be activated by a carrier.

You may try using Instant Messengers such as Yahoo to text.

Such devices will require you to be in a range of WiFi networks.

There are wifi handhelds like the Sony Mylo or the Zipit, they let you connect to any open wifi signal and you can use yahoo, aim, etc. Some have subscriptions and some are just devices you buy and then use in free wifi areas.

On T-Mobile some people use Sidekicks exclusively for texting and internet, you can even get a Sidekick plan that cannot use voice calls at all.
