you don't have to use the + you can use 00 instead. 0061xxxxxxx

+61 is the country code and make sure that you drop the first zero of the number. And yes, it will not work without the "+"

i.e. if your friends number is 0418628338

then you type [phone] into the phone number line of the person whom you're intending to send the txt to depending on what handset you're using.

Tip: Make sure that you check your carriers txt message rates for International txts as some carriers will charge you like a wounded bull. I know that here in Australia they can carge you up to 75 cents per txt depending on what carrier you're using, and what country you're sending the txt to.
