Tey Seu Bock believes Chong Wei is playing his role to groom young shuttlers – Badminton News
Malaysia’s ace shuttler Lee Chong Wei vowed to play his part in the grooming of youngsters and National singles coach Tey Seu Bock has appreciated maestro’s concern for country’s badminton future.
World Number one Chong Wei showed his intentions to prepare back-up shuttlers like Wei Feng Chong, Daren Liew and Arif Abdul Latif to ensure Malaysia’s supremacy in the arena.
Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) arranged joint training session for all these players and Seu Bock believes this has started yielding good results.
He stated that these training sessions have helped Wei Feng to elevate his badminton skills. He also added that Daren Liew, despite of undergoing a bad patch, will also excel in future tournaments.
Seu Bock said, "Wei Feng has become steadier as he is physically stronger and his strokes are more consistent due to regular training with Chong Wei. Daren is struggling a bit now. Once he continues working hard he can move forward again."
World Number 30 Wei Feng showed signs of improvement in last couple of international events as he managed to overcome a higher ranked Thai player Boonsak Ponsana in China Masters and then grabbed all the attention by securing a berth in the quarter-finals
of Japan Open.
Moreover, Wei Feng also earned great deal of admiration for his splendid run in the Taiwan Open. He registered his mark by putting a good show of skills against Chong Wei in the semi-final round.
National Singles coach Seu Bock declared this a result of Chong Wei’s honest efforts in the nets. He revealed that the Malaysian ace does not play with full capacity and provides his young sparing partners a chance to spend maximum time on the court.
Meanwhile, BAM also decided to give equal opportunity to its 2016 squad and summoned youngsters like Iskandar Zulkarnain Zainuddin and Goh Soon Huat in national training camp.
Seu Bock thinks that these practice sessions have given them confidence to compete at international level and budding players like Arif, Iskandar and Soon Huat have showed steady progress in last couple of weeks.
He said, "Joint training sessions with the Project 2016 players have also helped Arif Latif step up his performance while others like Iskandar Zulkarnain and Goh Soon Huat have been showing promise."
However, the badminton guru admitted that these youngsters have long way to go and they should make best out of Chong Wei’s presence in the central training camp.
Now the upcoming badminton events will be tough trials for back-up shuttlers like Wei Feng and Daren Liew as they will be up against World beaters like Sho Sasaki, Simon Santoso, Tommy Sugiarto, Du Pengyu and Rajiv Ouseph.
Though, they have been blessed with Chong Wei’s coaching but still they need to put an extra effort to prove themselves true successors of the badminton legend.
