Tey Seu Bock thinks Lee Chong Wei can become World Champion before hanging up his racket
Malaysia’s badminton king Lee Chong Wei could not pocket an Olympic gold medal in London Games but his coach Tey Seu Bock believes that the maestro can make amends by winning World Championships title in next two years.
World Number two Chong Wei knelt down against Chinese arch-rival Lin Dan in the grand finale of 2012 Olympics.
The two-time Olympic silver medallist is expected to bid adieu to the arena after 2014 which means he will grace two World Championships, Asian Games and Commonwealth Games before his retirement.
National Singles coach Seu Bock considers him a strong contender for these titles as he stated that Chong Wei’s failure to lock the honour in major tournaments has increased his desire and he will go all out to fulfil this thirst.
He said, "Chong Wei has achieved so much but he just couldn't win a major event. His hunger to win a major has only grown stronger and there are two world championships and the Asian Games for him to fulfil his dream."
At the moment, when the Malaysian ace has decided to continue for two more years his Chinese nemesis Lin Dan mulls to bid farewell to the arena.
This will leave an open road for Chong Wei to go after his dream of becoming World Champion as no other shuttler can jeopardize his prospects.
However, Seu Bock’s angle is quite different as he declared that he will not succeed just because of Lin Dan's absence rather his aim to call it a day as World Champion will push him to end his drought.
He said, "His chances will increase not because Lin Dan may decide to retire this year but his own desire and determination is to end his career as a world champion."
Meanwhile, the badminton guru advised him to stay away from injuries in next couple of years as he will need more recovery time at this age.
He also added that he must be wary of the younger lot as they will put his physical and mental strength in test.
The talented youngsters like China’s Chen Long, Kenichi Tago of Japan and the Korean campaigner Shon Wan Ho can be his potential competitors.
Chong Wei’s next big challenge will be 2013 World Championships and then he will be participating in Commonwealth Games to defend his title.
