Teymuraz Gabashvili, Philipp Kohlschreiber advance to the second round of BMW Open
Teymuraz Gabashvili defeats Rainer Schuettler 3-6, 6-4, 6-3
World number 79 Teymuraz Gabashvili of Russia fought back from one set deficit to battle past German Rainer Schuettler, ranked 92nd in the world, in three sets 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 in the opening round at the BMW Open in Munich
on Tuesday.
Schuettler needed a single break of serve in the first set, claiming it 6-3. The German hit a single ace and 71 percent of the first serves in the opening set. The 35-year-old converted 77 percent of the first serves into points
in the first set. Schuettler capitalized on one of the five break point opportunities he created in the opening set.
Gabashvili came back in the second set, breaking his opponent in the ninth game to clinch the set 6-4. The Russian delivered 74 percent of the first serves, winning 57 percent of the points on them in the second set. The 25-year-old
converted two of the four break points he received and saved five of the six break points he faced in the second set.
The Russian broke Schuettler in the sixth game of the deciding set and consolidated on the single break of serve, winning the set 6-3. Gabashvili matched his second set’s first serve percentage, firing 74 percent of the first serves
and converting 75 percent of them into points in the final set. The match lasted for just over two hours and two minutes.
Gabashvili will meet another German Florian Mayer, seeded fifth at the championship, in the second round.
Philipp Kohlschreiber beats Robert Farah 6-3, 6-1
German Philipp Kohlschreiber, ranked 42nd in the world, crushed his Colombian opponent Robert Farah in straight sets to qualify for the second round. The German lost just four games in the first round match, winning
it 6-3, 6-1 in only one hour and seven minutes.
Kohlschreiber broke Farah in the ninth game of the opening set and won it 6-3. The German fired 58 percent of the first serves and won 64 percent of the points on them in the opening set. In comparison, Farah served far better
as he fired three aces and 80 percent of the first serves in the opening set.
In the second set, Kohlschreiber thrashed his opponent as he allowed the Colombian to win just a single game and claimed the set 6-1. The German hit a couple of aces and 59 percent of the first serves in the second set. The right–handed
won a whopping 90 percent of the first service points in the second set.
Kohlschreiber is drawn to play his countryman, world number 105 Denis Gremelmayr in the second round.
