Teymuraz Gabashvili and Martin Vassallo Arguello reach the 2nd round of the Seguros Bolivar Open
The top seed Russian, Teymuraz Gabashvili, crushed the Brazilian, Fernando Romboli, in the first round of the Seguros Bolivar Open in Barranquilla, Colombia, on Wednesday night. The Russian had no difficulty to outshine his opponent in straight sets, 6-1,
6-1, in a mere 67 minutes of play to advance to the second round of the Challenger Tour competition.
It was a brilliant show of sheer dominance from the 25-year-old Russian to outclass his bleak opponent. Romboli appeared to be a total mismatch to Gabashvili, who gave him no chance to have any impact in the game. The Russian was aggressive throughout the
contest, capitalizing on most of his opportunities in the game, en route to victory.
Gabashvili was off as a flyer in his opening set, clinching 73 per cent of the first serve points and 28 out of 47 total points in the set. He crafted break chances at six different occasions in the first set and converted three of them to edge past his
rival. Rombali was able to hold his serve in just one game before submitting the opening set to Gabashvili at 1-6.
The following set brought no luck for the Brazilian as he kept on crumbling under the pressure of defeat. Three double faults exacerbated Romboli’s position in the match who was only able to collect 16 out of 43 total points in the second set. Gabashvili
struck two serve breaks to nab the second set at 6-1, concluding his victory. Argentine qualifier, Martin Vassallo Arguello, is next in line to face the Russian in the next round of the Challenger Tour competition in Barranquilla.
Arguello, like Gabashvili, exhibited an outstanding performance in the first round to outclass the Norwegian wildcard, Sander Brendmoe, in straight sets, 6-0 and 6-0, in only 52 minutes of play. It was an amazing display of high quality professional tennis
from the Argentine winning every game in the contest, not letting his opponent to hold serve even once.
The two contestants delivered exactly 47 per cent of their first serve on target but Arguello collected 80 per cent of total serve and return points in the first set with exceptional skills to pressurize the Norwegian. The Argentine stung three serve breaks
and rocketed away to 6-0 to close out the opening set and lead the matchup 1-0.
The second set was no different from the first one as Arguello kept replicating his opening set feats. He won 100 percent of first set points and struck three more serve breaks to send Brendmoe out of the match. Arguello finished of the second set at 6-0
to advance to the second round of the competition in Barranquilla where he will be facing Teymuraz Gabashvili to fight for a quarter-final berth.
