Teymuraz Gabashvili rallies past Tsung-Hua Yang into the final qualifier – US Open 2012
World number 174, Teymuraz Gabashvili of Russia, booked his place in the main draw of the US Open by beating Chinese Taipei’s Tsung-Hua Yang in the final qualifier.
Gabashvili drew the first blood by winning the opener but Yang bounced back to win the second set and equalise at one set apiece. However, the Russian player made the final kill, as he won the decider, winning the contest 6-4,
3-6, 6-3 to move to the main draw.
In the first set, both players held their opening serves to level the score at 1-1. Gabashvili hit a blow to his Taiwanese rival in the third game and consolidated on it to go up 3-1. Though, Yang did not take much time to even
out the proceedings at 3-3. The subsequent two games went again with serves to take the score to 4-4. Gabashvili struck again in the ninth and this time he did not allow the Taiwanese contestant to fight back, winning it 6-4.
The Russian participant and Yang did not lose their serve in the first three games of the second set to take the score to 2-1 in favour of the latter. The Taiwanese contender grabbed a breakthrough in the fourth one and held his
next serve to gain a 4-1 lead. Yang kept his advantage till the end of the proceedings, sealing it 6-3.
The Taiwanese player carried the winning momentum into the final set and was looking strong at the beginning, as he broke Gabashvili in the very first game and won his following serve to move ahead 2-0. However, the Russian contestant
hit back immediately to square off the score at 2-2. There was no break of serve in the subsequent three games, taking the score to 4-3 in Gabashvili’s favour. The Russian participant converted his fourth break point in the eighth to take a 5-3 lead and made
the most of that advantage to capture it 6-3.
Gabashvili is slated to take on the world number 112, Rogerio Dutra Silva of Brazil, in the opening match of the main draw. The Brazilian player received a direct entry in the main round due to his better ranking.
