TfL to issue Oyster cards for Queen’s 50th birthday and London Olympics 2012
The Transport of London (TfL) has recently made it public that a limited edition of Oyster cards will be available for sale in the later part of this year.
The Oyster cards will be made available in order to celebrate the fifty years of the Queen of England as well as the London 2012 Olympic Games that are scheduled to commence from July 27.
The Diamond Jubilee of the Queen of England will take place over the weekend in June and the first Oyster card marks the event with an official portrait of the Queen. The Oyster card featuring the portrait of the Queen will be made available for purchasing
from all of the London Underground ticket offices. The sale will start to take place from mid May onwards.
The second Oyster card will celebrate the coming of the Olympic Games to London for the third time to the capital of England. After having hosted the Olympic Games this year, London will become the first city in the world to have welcomed the Games for a
total of three times.
A spokesperson of the TfL expressed himself in the following manner while talking about the Oyster cards, “Commemorative Oyster cards have been very popular with the travelling public...Transport will play a vital role in bringing people out to see The Queen
during her Diamond Jubilee, and in getting people to all of the sporting and cultural events during the London 2012 Games and so it is fitting that we have limited edition Oyster cards that they can use and keep to mark these wonderful, once in a lifetime,
occasions.”
Tfl also released Oyster cards last year which were to mark the wedding of Prince William with Kate Middleton.
The total number of cards that will be made available for sale this year are 1.5 million. The cost of each of the Oyster card is set to be £10.
TfL is enthusiastic about the response that the release of the Oyster cards will get from the public based on the sales that took place last year and it is expected that an increased number of sales will be made this time around.
