I was thinking of taking one month of Thai Boxing..could I learn the basics in this time? I realize I could watch videos online, but I want to spar with some guys for a month or so. I would do it longer, but I start classes in 1.5 months..so that is the most I could get in. Would I be able to learn some fundamentals in that time? From what I've read, its not as complicated as Judo / BJJ or any grounwork

  1. Dont think that just because ur learning the basics means its going to be easy. Muay thai is more complicated than u think. Im a thai boxer myself and it takes one year to master the basics so how long do u think it would take to just get used to the basics? They dont just teach u right away they condition and strengthen u.  It takes one month to know there form and takes another month to get used to the movement and another to use slightly fluently. making a total of three months just to be able to use them appropriately. Also u cant spar any1 with only one month of experience. it takes five months just to spar and and 9-12 months to be a fluent fighter. so take ur time and dont rush.

  2. You can learn some basic kicks, punches, and elbows - sure.  You can spar, and learn some combinations. You may  miss some of the details of the techniques without an instructor, but who knows - maybe you will just get it, and understand.

Overall, though - llike any art, it takes practice -- think about standard American boxing. The techniques are simple and limited.  Sure - you can learn the jab, upper cut, cross, and hook punch -- you can learn to bob and weave.  But just because I know how to jab doesn't mean I know how to use it like Tyson or Ali. It doesn't mean I know when to use it.  In baseball, I can swing a bat with descent technique, but it doesn't mean I can hit one out of Yankee Stadium.

It's a sport and like any sport, it takes a lot of work.

I've learned a bunch of arts and Muay Thai is difficult to do well... still - it doesn't hurt to gain some knowledge and I always think that in a lot of arts, sometimes things just click.  Also, it may be fun. Good luck.
