Thai Haku posts her first win for Chad Brown in the South Beach Stakes at Gulfstream Park
The 4-year-old Irish bred filly, Thai Haku, has done pretty well since becoming Chad Brown’s trainee and at Gulfstream Park on 11 December, 2011, she presented her trainer with her first win under his command in the $60,000 South Beach Stakes.
Chad Brown took over from Mikel Delzangles, the previous trainer of the filly, and ever since the switch Thai Haku has run thrice for new trainer Chad Brown.
The filly raced in France until last summer, and after winning the South Beach Stakes she registered her first win in three U.S. starts.
The Irish bred daughter of Oasis Dream, out of mare Coconut Show by Linamix, Thai Haku’s win at Gulfstream Park’s turf against a tough field of eleven, means that she has established herself as a contender for more important turf stakes races at Gulfstream
Park in 2012.
Prior to the South Beach Stakes, Thai Haku raced twice for Chad Brown. Her debut with the new trainer was at Belmont Park’s Grade 3 Noble Damsel late this past summer where she finished second.
Her second start for Chad Brown was in the Grade 3 Athenia Stakes and that too at Belmont Park where the filly finished third to winner Denomination over at 1 1/16 miles.
In the South Beach Stakes, Thai Haku rallied down the stretch to catch up with the 45 to 1 Hooh Why about a 100 yards from the finish line, overhauled her, found herself home free to post a victory over the eventual second place finisher by 1 ¼ lengths in
the seven and a half furlong event.
“She got a beautiful ride and a beautiful trip,” said Brown. “I had a good teacher and we have a good system in place for the European horses that come into our barn. There’s also a lot of leeway in the program I learned. It’s simply a matter of getting
these horses to adapt and Americanize themselves. I probably ran her back a little too soon in her last start and the yielding course was not for her that day. Although the course was listed as good today it was good footing and a lot firmer than what she’s
used to.”
