I'm going to a Thai restaurant but I'm not too keen on anything too hot and spicy and wondering what the best mild to medium options are in starters and main courses.

  1. A mixed starter to share is usually ild, sesame toasties, sate chicken, prawn filo parcels, thai fish cakes but avoid the sweet chilli dip.

Then for main go for a noodle dish but not singapore noodles cause they are hot.

The sometimes do a sweet and sour which is good.

and their stir frys are chilli free.

The hottest things they do are the currys.

  2. You can always ask for no spice on your menu item, I'm pregnant right now and can't tolerate the spiciness and the restaurant is always happy to accomodate me.  I lean on the noodle side of the menu, I like the thick noodle dish phad see ewe and that one is generally not spicy.  There's also the classic phad thai with the thinner noodles and has a tangy sauce.  Another classic dish is the chicken basil, just ask for no spice. Make sure you save room for the mango and sticky rice, Thai mangos totally rock!

  3. All Thai restaurants have dishes that are not spicy. It's true that often times the spicy dishes tend to be more popular.

You can always tell them not to make it as spicy.

If you want a curry dish, the least spicy is usually the yellow curry.

Most of the noodle dishes are not spicy as well.

Sate, spring rolls, and saute vegetable dishes are usually not spicy.

  4. Ask for "fresh rolls", these are not fried, inside is vegi's, rice noodles and a basil leaf.  The dipping sauce is like honey with a very little hot pepper flakes and chopped peanuts.  These are excellent!!!  Not hot at all.

For a disk, I second the Pad Thai suggestion.  Tell them to make it mild.  Pad Thai is the most famous of Thai dishes.

  5. Pad Thai.  Tell the waitress not too spicy please.

  6. Try spring rolls or the soup for starters and a garlic chicken dish or pad thai noodle with vegetables for the main dish...those are pretty safe dishes.

  7. Just take a look at the menu as most Thai places abroad have marked those dishes which are hot.  But for starters a fish or shrimp patty or cake is always mild.  Pad Thai is a popular dish and is not spicy.  Chicken basil is also a dish which is usually mild.  Play it safe and ask your server for suggestions. Luck.
