Thai-Son Kwiatkowski battles past Max de Vroome into second round – Boys’ Singles: Wimbledon 2012
USA’s Thai-Son Kwiatkowski fought back after getting thrashed in the second set to outlast Max de Vroome of the Netherlands 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 in the opening round of the boys’ doubles event at the Wimbledon Championships on Tuesday.
The American needed one hour and 30 minutes to post this win over his opponent.
Kwiatkowski and Vroome held their serve in the first four games to square off the score at 2-2. The American struck in the fifth and won his following serve to attain a 4-2 lead. Kwiatkowski maintained his lead till the end, grabbing
it 6-4.
The American won most of the points with the help of his big serves, hitting a couple of aces and 81 percent of the first deliveries in the opening set. He had a stunning first and average second serve conversion rate, winning
17 of the 21 and three of the five points on them respectively.
Kwiatkowski and Vroome did not lose their serve in the first three games of the second set to take the score to 2-1 in favour of the former. The Dutch held his serve throughout, triumphing 6-3.
Vroome bombarded six aces but he also committed a couple of double faults, putting in 70 percent of the first serves and claiming 16 of the 19 points on them. The Dutch contestant fared brilliantly at the net, securing six of the
eight points on the volleys.
The 18-year-old, Vroome, was looking to wrap up the match quickly, as he grabbed a break in the opening game of the final set and held his subsequent serve to build a 2-0 lead. However, Kwiatkowski hit back in the sixth and squared
off the proceedings at 3-3. Serving to stay in the contest at 4-5, Vroome was unable to win his serve, going down 4-6.
Kwiatkowski fired three aces and made two double faults in the decider. The American had a low first serve percentage of 44 but claimed 12 of the 15 points on them. Kwiatkowski converted both break points he received.
The American is drawn to face Elias Ymer of Sweden in the second round.
