Thailand Open 2010, Jurgen, Garcia-Lopez breezes into the quarters
The third seed Jurgen Melzer from Austria and Ernests Gulbis, a fourth ranked tennis player from Latvia successfully managed to make their way into the quarter final round of the US$550,000 PTT Thailand Open tennis tournament on
Wednesday.
While Jurgen had some issues in his straight set victory over his Israeli tennis foe, Dudi Sela, 6-3, 6-4.
Ernests on the other hand required just three sets to get the better of Rainer Schuettler from Germany on Wednesday. The final match score was 7-6 (4), 6-7 (4), 6-4.
World number thirteen Jurgen, who received a first round bye, required just eighty-five minutes to defeat the Israeli at Muang Thong Thani's Impact Arena on Wednesday.
The Austrian, a French Open semi finalist, managed to break Dudi at the start of the match and then never looked back till the end. His attacking forehand shots proved too strong for his foe.
''I did not play very well today. Dudi was tough and made me play all over the court. But I found ways to beat him so I am very happy today. I like the tournament. Everything is great, the hotel and the venue are very nice. That is why I come back,” said
Melzer after his victory yesterday.
Jurgen, who made his way into the semi finals back in 2009, will next meet either Jarkko Nieminen from Finland or Serbian Viktor Troicki.
While commenting on his next round opponents, the Austrian said that both of them are playing quite well in this tournament however he has full confidence in his form and he will definitely try his level best to win the next clash as well.
In an evening encounter, Gulbis who is ranked number twenty-five in the world received a scare from Schuettler.
After grabbing the opening set and losing the next, Gulbis bounced back and did well to break his foe during the second game of the final set for a lead of 2-0.
The Latvian tennis player then led 4-2 and went on to win the match for a berth in the quarter final where he will face Guillermo Garcia-Lopez from Spain.
''I am happy to win this match. He played very fast and gave me trouble'', said Gulbis on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, Garcia-Lopez had to play for two hours and forty-five minutes to overpower French player Florent Serra in a three set clash. The final match score was 7-5, 6-7 (3), 7-5. The winner blasted a total of seventeen aces and prevented twelve of fourteen
break points.
German, Benjamin Becker, got the better of his countrymen and last week’s Open de Moselle runner up, Mischa Zverev in two sets. The final match score was 6-1, 6-4. Becker, as a result of this victory will next take on the second seed Spanish Fernando Verdasco.
In the doubles action on Wednesday, Sanchai Ratiwatana and Sonchat were defeated by Viktor Troicki and Christopher Kas in a two set clash. The final match score was 6-4, 6-4.
The Thai twins captured their first ATP trophy at the Thailand Open tennis tournament back in 2007. However, they have since failed to surpass the first hurdle for three seasons in a row.
In other action in Kuala Lumpur, Marcos Baghdatis made his way into the quarter final round of the Malaysian Open tennis tournament after getting the better of Santiago Giraldo in two sets on Wednesday. The final match score was 7-5, 7-5. The match concluded
in a time period of one hour and forty-five minutes in Kuala Lumpur.
Baghdatis. who earlier surpassed Kei Nishikori easily in straight sets smashed a total of ten aces to get past Santiago to confirm his quarter berth at the Malaysian Open on Wednesday.
