Thailand Open 2012: Sourabh Varma stuns Alamsyah Yunus to surge into Men’s Singles quarter-final
India’s upcoming player Sourabh Varma made his presence felt when he surged into Men’s Singles quarter-final after putting up stunning performance against the higher ranked Alamsyah Yunus of Indonesia in pre-quarter-final battle at Thailand Open GP Gold
2012 in Thailand, on Thursday, June 7.
The in-form Sourabh, who has been seeded at number 12 in Men’s Singles main draw of the tournament, put up a spirited show of top quality badminton in the court and overpowered the seventh seed Yunus in a thrilling battle that took three games of attacking
badminton.
The lower ranked Indian lost the first game with a reasonable margin but he delivered a staggering performance and grabbed the following games to oust his Indonesian opponent after this 69-minute encounter.
On the other hand, the higher ranked Yunus started it well and won the opening game but failed to continue his positive run in the court and lost the following games to his spirited rival and crashed out at the round-of-16 stage.
In the first game, Sourabh played to his maximum potential and did not let his Indonesian rival to dictate the affairs in the court at any stage. He remained close on the score board until the one-minute break.
After the interval, Sourabh became aggressive by taking the bird early and executed beautiful strokes in right areas which helped him to reach at 18-15.
However, the Indian lost his focus at this crucial stage and failed to earn even one more point and eventually lost the game with a margin of 18-21.
However, Sourabh did not commit any mistake in controlling the pace of rallies in the following set and set up an impressive lead of 11-6 until the break.
After the mid-game interval, the Indian continued his inspiring performance as he was everywhere in the court and managed to win the battle with a huge margin of 21-13.
In the deciding game, it was the Indonesian who remained in commanding position for much part of the game and reached at 15-9 when Sourabh showed his brilliance and levelled the score at 19-19.
The Indian was consistent in his positive play and eventually grabbed the deciding game with a tight score of 22-20.
Sourabh emerged as the winner in this epic fight against Yunus with a sensational 18-21, 21-13 and 22-20 score on the board.
