Thailand’s Pariya Junhasavasdikul moves into contention in the second round of Indonesian Masters
Thailand’s Pariya Junhasavasdikul, with his solid seven-under 65 in the second round of the Indonesian Masters on Friday, has moved into contention at the halfway stage of the tournament. Malaysian Shabban Hussin is leading the leaderboard of the second
round with world number two, Lee Westwood, fast catching up with a flurry of birdies in his front nine.
Pariya, a management graduate from Purdue University, is also a licensed pilot and has been performing well and is steadily rising in the Asian Tour rankings. Pariya made a breakthrough last year when he won the 2010 Mercuries Taiwan Masters, his maiden
victory on the tour. He is also the winner of the 2008 Mercedes-Benz Masters in Singapore.
“I’m very happy with the result. My ball striking has been really good but my putting is not cooperating at all. I think I only had two birdies from inside 20 feet, the others were from inside 10 feet,” said Pariya, “I holed out an eagle from the very front
of the green from about 90 feet away. I chipped in for par on hole 14 and made a long putt on hole one from off the green for birdie. It was a pretty lucky day. When you shoot seven-under, I’m not going to really complain about it.”
The 26-year-old Thai golfer sunk from 90 feet on the 12th to post an eagle. He pulled in six birdies and just one bogey. He had finished the first round at even par which left him trailing the leader on the second day with just two shots. Westwood
was recorded as moving faster than ever and climbed up the leaderboard to challenge the leader Hussin for the lead. He had an aggregate of eight-under and had just rolled into the back nine.
Last month’s SAIL Open winner, Kiradech Aphibarnrat, was also seen steadily climbing the leaderboard. He missed the halfway cut in the Malaysian open and is all set to challenge the contenders here at the Royale Jakarta Golf Club. He scored seven-under,
68.
The next round should bring some exciting golf as Westwood zones in on the leaders.
