I'm getting married next month and my cousin and his wife sent my fiance and me a giftcard for one of the places we registered at. They live out of state and they're not attending the wedding. So my question is...how could I word the thank you note? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  1. Thank you for the gift card that you sent as a wedding gift.  That was so thoughtful of you and I really appreciate it.  I am sorry that you won't be able to attend my wedding but I understand that you can't make it.

  2. Just say something like this:

    Dear ______

Thank you so much for the gift card to ________. We will definitely get good use out of it!

Even though you are not able to attend the wedding we will be thinking about you! We will definitely send pictures once we get them.

    Love,

    ____

  3. It is not ok for you to reference a gift card.  Like money it is not something we specifically mention.  Instead you use code words for it in a thank you note such as "your generous gift."

    Dear Cousin & Wife,

Thank you for your generous wedding gift.  How thoughtful of you to help us furnish our new apartment!

Fiance and I wish you could join us in the celebration of our marriage, but we will remember you fondly on our special day.  When you are in town we would love to have you over to see our new place.  Thank you again for your kindness.

    Love,

    Cousin and Fiance

    Hope this helps!

ETA: To the poster below me-- there is no rule to mention cash.  In fact, there is a rule forbidding it.  It is one of the TACKIEST things you can do to mention cash or a gift card in a thank you note.  Please, please do not ever do this again.  Seriously.

  4. Dear Mary and Bob, Thank you so much for the giftcard to -----! I will use it after the wedding to purchase whatever I still need to get from the registry list.

Sam wants to be sure that we have a toaster oven, my sweet fiancee wants to help with the cooking duties. I think that will not be an issue.

Thanks again for your thoughtfulness, Janie

Rules: if you write it, you sign it, mention the fiancee in the body of the note. Say what the gift was, but not any amounts. Say what you might use cash or a gift card for, and pick something sensible to use it for, people like to hear that you are spending it wisely.

  5. You can say something like:

Thank you for the gift card. Joe and I will have such fun using it to decorate our new home and we will think of you and your generosity when we are using it to purchase something lovely for our home.

  6. "Dear...,

Thank you so much for the gift card. We used it to buy______. I would've loved for you you two to be there, but I understand that you couldn't. I'll send you some pictures when they are done, and fill you in on the details.

    With much Love ___"
