Describe "crossing over" in Prophase I and how this can create genetic diversity.

Meiosis is involved in the formation of gametes. Gametes are important in sexual reproduction. Explain.

Cells, such as, the egg and sperm cells have only ½ the normal number of chromosomes. These kinds of cells are referred to as:

polypoid cells.

diploid cells.

haploid cells.

monoploid cells.

Given the following information. Which statement is correct?

A goldfish’s body cell normally has 46 chromosomes.

The egg cell of a goldfish contains 138 chromosomes.

The egg cell of a goldfish contains 46 chromosomes.

The egg cell of a goldfish contains 92 chromosomes.

The egg cell of a goldfish contains 23 chromosomes.

  1. Q1----->As we that in meiosis is proceded by DNA replication, during which each of the chromosome replicates. For each chromosomes, there are two genetically identical sister chromatids(as yet unseparated).

At this stage gene mutations can take place, that may create new version of genes alleles  ultimately become a cause for biological diversity.

Later, in prophaseI, chromosomes starts to condense. The homologous, each consisting of two sister chromatids, pair up in a process called synapsis to form bivalents.

At this stage arm of the chromatids can be entangled that can results into crossing over process.

Q2 -->Meiosis is a special type of cell division concerned with producing s*x cells( or gametes) for the purpose of sexual reproduction. It involves  a single chromosomal duplication followed by two successive nuclear division, and results in a halfing of the diploid chromosome number.

    Meiosisdivision consists of two phases

    meiosis I and II.
