looking for help with teaching at home for a child who will be starting high school in two years time and who is also dyslexic .

Schools don,t have the one to one help needed so home teaching full time could be an option . We already have seen a massive improvement by paying for one hour a week private teaching .

  1. I bet if you search Yahoo!Groups you will find a discussion group dedicated to that....

  2. You do not say whether you are in the UK or not but assuming that you are then try:

    Home Education Advisory Service

    ttp://www.heas.org.uk/

    Education Otherwise

    http://www.education-otherwise.org/

    Parents Centre (DfES)

    http://www.parentscentre.gov.uk/educatio...

I think the ones mentioned by the other answerers are USA based.

    Addition:

II neither agree nor disagree with grayure.  I think it is important to have a child centred approach to a certain extent, but it must not rule the way in which a child is educated.  Each child is different.  My daughter wants to study law at university, therefore we are working with her so that she can achieve her ambition.  However, she may well change her mind in the next few years (as teenagers often do)  and therefore I feel that she should be exposed to as wide a curriculum as possible at her age (13).  This will give her the best opportunity to decide for herself how she wishes to be educated in the future.  Child choice, certainly.  However a child CANNOT make an informed choice without being offered the full range of options.

II am not a member of EO or any other HE organisation, but I feel that parents and children should be aware of their existence so that they can judge for themselves.

  3. Try NATHHAN

    http://www.nathhan.org

It is a website that supports special needs homeschoolers.

Here is some information that will get you started on homeschooling:

    http://www.successful-homeschooling.com

    Hope this helps!

  4. http://www.virtualhomeschoolgroup.com/

    or contact me at

    armoorefam@centurytel.net

    I am a volunteer homeschool mom/teacher there.

  5. I use www.time4learning.com I use it as her core curriculum. Its all done online and isn't but 19.99 a month, it goes up to 8th grade, I have noticed HUGE improvements using this.

  6. www.hslda.org

    www.oceanetwork.org

    www.nheri.org

    www.home-school.com

There are hundreds of home-school groups on Yahoo and other internet places.

If you go to hslda.org you can find links to support groups in the area where you live.

www.robinsoncurriculum.com is one of my favorites.

  7. There might be someone on this site that could help you:

    http://www.thehomeschoollounge.com/

  8. www.homeschool.com

  9. We're in the middle of setting one up.  Please send me your email address and i'll send you the URL when it's ready.  Don't hold your breath though; most people in our group are very disorganised and not au fait with the internet.

Incidentally, home tuition really isn't the way to go with home ed because it's inefficient compared to a child-centred approach and they need to socialise.  Home education doesn't mean home teaching, and you're in danger of isolating children socially and holding them back academically if you do it that way.

I wouldn't touch EO (education otherwise) with a barge pole nowadays.  They've become completely lost in internal squabbling and are a complete waste of time.
