  2. If you are a professional composer, then hopefully you will have some well made recordings of your music and this puts you at an advantage to many composers.  Ultimately, you still have to network with decision makers (conductors and music directors) by meeting them, talking to them, introducing your music and recordings to them.  You have to build a reputation - and spend a lot of time working on getting this done.  Some professional composers spend 50% of their time networking and doing more business activities (sending out mail, phone calls, meeting conductors, etc.)

Honestly, I don't think my answer to your other question is any different - you still need to apply to contests (there are many that are international) because by winning, you have a better story that can get someone to listen to you longer than someone who has no name, no recording experience, etc.  It isn't mandatory but it helps to have a recognized name as a composer and contests can help you do that.  For example, if you win an award - even if they've not heard of you, they might have heard of other composers who won this award so they might take you more seriously.

This is very hard to do and can take many years, but ultimately, it is about networking and meeting people who are in a position to select your music for performance.  Most wont be interested or will tell you to change the music because it has too many notes and the next person will say it doesn't have enough notes, etc.  I do think you have a big advantage since you have been performed already in your country.  You have orchestras that you can say have played your music.

Start using the internet to find out who the music directors are in some smaller or community orchestras that sometimes play music similar to what you write then contact them.  If the orchestra is more popular, they'll likely be booked for years to come plus have very stringent requirements on who they perform.

  3. I would recommend contacting universities, colleges, and conservatories.  Many colleges are looking for the experience for their ensembles to work with original composers, as well as to be allowed to premier beautiful pieces of music.

Most schools pay a little bit for the right to play the music, and depending on what they are looking for for their students, they will most likely pay your travel and lodging expenses, and a small salary to work directly with the performers.

I know this isn't your end all goal, as you would most likely prefer professional and recognized orchestras to showcase your music, but it would be a good place to start.  Also, don't underestimate the college level ensembles- there are MANY good musicians that will graduate soon and give the pros a run for their money.  Also, many are already professionals and going back for their masters or doctorates degrees.

To find schools, just google "music conservatory"... it gives you more than 475,000 results... just scroll through and pick some.  You just need to call the head of their music department, usually listed on their website.

I hope this was helpful, and happy writing! :)

*EDIT: Also, try checking out The Guild of International Songwriters and Composers and see what kind of networking you can do! http://www.songwriters-guild.co.uk/
