2y^2 +7x +3

Would this be prim because of the seven?

  1. Just because there's a 7 doesn't mean it's prime. From looking at the fact it's y^2 and then x is problematic enough. I've never seen a trinomial factoring question with the variables like that.

If it's really supposed to be 2x^2 + 7x + 3, have you tried any combinations?

    (2x+3)(x+1)=2x^2 + 2x + 3x + 3 = 2x^2 + 5x + 3--not it

    (2x+1)(x+3) = 2x^2 + 6x + x + 3 = 2x^2 + 7x + 3--there you go

When you've got an "a" (the coefficient to the x^2), you have to try out different combinations before deciding that the trinomial is prime.
