Thanyakon Khrongpha eager to make a strong finish at the Thailand Golf Championship
Thanyakon Khrongpha is confident to secure his Asian Tour card, with a strong finish this week at the Thailand Golf Championship. The tournament will be played at the Amata Spring Country Club in Bangkok.
The US$1 million tournament has reeled in some prominent names, including the likes of the 15-time Asian Tour winner Thaworn Wiratchant, in-form Indians, Gaganjeet Bhullar and Shiv Kapur, and the winner of last week’s King’s Cup, Arnond Vongvanij.
Khrongpha, who currently holds the 72nd position in the Asian Tour Order of Merit, desperately needs a strong finish, in a bid to keep alive his hopes to secure his card.
Talking to the Asian Tour’s official website, he admitted that he was struggling with his short game, right from the beginning of the 2012 season.
In the meantime, he also expressed his pleasure in bringing some improvements in his putting technique in the past few months.
“My game is not bad. It is actually better compared to last year but my putting has been poor,” he said. “This is a long course but I’m quite confident that I can shoot a low score”.
He added, “I feel more pressure compared to last year because I’m trying to save my card. I feel I have a good chance. I just hope to get my putter working”.
Wiratchant, who currently leads the Order of Merit, is set to retain his position in the money list, with a strong performance this week in Bangkok.
With only two events left on the Asian Tour roster, the Thai star is in prime position to become the Order of Merit champion for the second time in his career. He won the prestigious title for the first time in 2005.
The second-ranked Marcus Fraser already decided to skip the remaining tournaments, in a bid to play on the PGA Tour of Australasia.
Therefore, only Jbe Kruger and Bhullar, who hold the third and the fourth position, respectively, can displace Wiratchant from the top of the rankings.
For that purpose, both of them will have to record big finishes in each of the last two tournaments. However, that seems almost impossible, considering the fact that Wiratchant is currently enjoying a great run of form.
