Thaworn Wiratchant eyes Masters Tournament berth in 2013
Thaworn Wiratchant of Thailand has set his sights on making it into the Masters Tournament’s field, by breaking into the top-50 in the Official World Golf Rankings.
Last year, Wiratchant played amazingly well in almost every tournament that he played. In total, he recorded three victories on the Asian Tour, which increased his career’s tally to 15 on the tour.
As a result, he became the only man in the history of the Asian Tour to achieve that feat. Courtesy of his outstanding performances, he also won the Asian Tour Order of Merit, and became the oldest player to become the Asian Tour number one.
At the end of the year, he found himself taking the 69th position in the Official World Golf Rankings. The Thai legend now plans to add another feature to his cap by making it into the first major golf championship of the season.
The tournament is slated to start from April 11, and will be staged at the Augusta National Golf Club.
Talking to the Asian Tour’s official website, the 46-year-old said that he will try his best to qualify for the tournament by the end of March this year.
“My goal is to try to get into the world’s top-50 in March. It will be good for me to try to qualify for the Masters. It is a tournament which I would like to play in,” said Thaworn.
In the meantime, the veteran also said that he will not set high goals, following a successful run last year. According to him, winning and losing is a part of the game. Therefore, he will have to do his best, rather than thinking only about the wins.
“Golf has a cycle. I don’t know how 2013 will be. If I’m fit enough, I might be successful again but we’ll just have to wait and see. Every week, when I make the cut, I am happy. I’m proud that I can still play against the good players on Tour,” he said.
After winning the Asian Tour Order of Merit last year, he received invitations to participate in the British Open and the World Golf Championships – Cadillac Championship. It will be his second appearance in both the tournaments.
