Thaworn Wiratchant leads the Worldwide Holdings Selangor Masters on day one
Thaworn Wiratchant stormed to the top of the leaderboard, on day one of the Worldwide Holdings Selangor Masters, after posting a round of 66, which included five birdies and an eagle against a lone bogey.
Wiratchant got off to a solid start, as a three wood approach shot from the fairway landed inches away from the pin on the 12th hole – his third. Afterwards, he delightedly one-putted for an eagle.
He then ended the back nine with a birdie on the 18th hole for a three-under par score. The front nine of the course also witnessed him make a strong start, as he birdied three of the first five holes that he played.
He stumbled for a bogey on the sixth hole, which he offset by birdying the very next hole. At the end of the round, he was leading the field by one stroke.
“Now, I’m very relaxed. I come to play, see good friends. I’m 46 now, no longer a young boy. No longer 36, no longer have good power,” said the 2005 Asian Tour number one.
“I practice too much. I wake up at 5.20 every morning, my wife will ask me 'Where are you going?' I will go to the golf course and then come back at 8.10 and at 9, I’ll go out to the course again. I like doing so, I like to play golf. If I don’t play golf
or practice, I get very tired and I’ll be sleeping at home,” added the 45-year-old.
He is currently enjoying a great form on the Asian Tour, as he won the Queen’s Cup and recorded runner-up finishes in both the CIMB Niaga Indonesian Masters and the Volvik Hildesheim Open J Golf Series.
Jonathan Moore, in the meantime, settled for the second position, after posting a five-under par 67, at the Kota Permai Golf and Country Club.
Unlike Wiratchant, Moore started off his round with back-to-back bogeys on the first two holes that he played.
He then managed to bounce back strongly with a run of three straight birdies, starting from the 12th hole. Afterwards, he added another five birdies against a lone bogey to his scorecard and finished the round on a high note.
Javi Colomo and Jhonnel Ababa shared the third spot, after posting 68 on the leaderboard.
