Thaworn Wiratchant makes a strong charge at the King’s Cup
Thaworn Wiratchant made a strong charge on the leaderboard on Saturday, after firing a seven-under par 65, in the third round of the King’s Cup.
The Thai star is now aiming his fourth victory of the season, after taking the second position, entering the final round at the Singha Park Khon Kaen Golf Club.
Wiratchant, who has won 15 Asian Tour events in his career, started off his round with birdies on the second, fourth and the eighth hole to reach the turn in three-under.
He then gained another birdie on the 10th hole, prior to dropping his only shot of the day on the 13th hole.
Thereafter, he parred the 14th hole, and followed that with four back-to-back birdies to finish the day on a high note.
At the end of the third round, he found himself settled for a 16-under par overall score, just one shot behind the leader Mardan Mamat.
Talking to the Asian Tour’s official website, he expressed his pleasure in entering into contention for the top spot, with only 18 holes to play in the tournament.
“It will be a close fight till the end but I’m feeling confident. I’ve been in this position many times and I know how to handle the pressure,” said Thaworn.
“Today was the best I’ve played so far this week and so long as I believe in myself, I can win again,” added the Thai veteran.
Wiratchant also aims to become the Asian Tour Order of Merit champion for the second time, having won the prestigious title in 2005, for the first time in his career.
Javi Colomo, in the meantime, took the fourth position, after carding a 14-under par three-round score.
The Spanish rookie carded rounds of 65, 72 and 65 in the first three rounds, and is confident to remain consistent on day four, in a bid to record his maiden victory on the Asian Tour.
“I’m feeling positive about tomorrow and will fight for a victory. I’ve been playing really well the last three days. Only yesterday, I didn’t have much luck on the greens. But today, I hit many good shots to the flag and managed to make several long birdie
putts,” said Colomo.
