Thaworn Wiratchant moves one step further towards the Asian Tour Order of Merit title
Thaworn Wiratchant took another step forward to become the 2012 Asian Tour Order of Merit champion, after finishing tied for the second position at the King’s Cup, on Sunday, December 2, 2012.
The Thai star pocketed US$42,375 as prize money, which increased his total prize money for the season to US$670,506. He now leads Marcus Fraser by US$18,000.
With only two tournaments left on the Asian Tour roster, Wiratchant is in prime position to secure the prestigious title for the second time in his career.
If he succeeds in his mission, he will also become the oldest winner of the Order of Merit, in the history of the Asian Tour.
Fraser, who recently participated in the PGA Tour’s Qualifying School Finals, has already announced that he will not be participating in this week’s Thailand Golf Championship.
In addition to that, he still has not committed to play in the US$2 million Iskandar Johor Open in Malaysia.
In the meantime, the third and the fourth ranked players, Jbe Kruger and Gaganjeet Bhullar, respectively, will have to record big finishes, in order to contend for the top spot in the standings.
With Wiratchant enjoying the best of his form – he has won three Asian Tour events this season – the duo does not appear to stand much chance to overhaul the 45-year-old veteran in the money list.
“I’m beginning to believe that I can win the Order of Merit for the second time,” said Wiratchant. “There’re still two more events to play and I’m confident of doing well. Winning the Order of Merit again is definitely going to be a big achievement as it
shows that age is not barrier to success”.
Talking about the Thailand Golf Championship, he said that he will have to work really hard, in order to contend strongly in the event.
According to him, the Amata Spring Country Club, the venue course, favours the long hitters. Therefore, being a short hitter, he will have to depend on his accuracy, in a bid to record a strong finish in Bangkok.
“I just need to do well again at Amata Spring next week,” he said. “The course favours long hitters and it’ll be a challenge for me as I’m not one of the biggest hitters on Tour. But we’ll see. With my form, I’m capable of a good result anytime”.
