Thaworn Wiratchant on fire once again, wins the Worldwide Holdings Selangor Masters
Thaworn Wiratchant fired a three-under par 69 on Saturday, and claimed the 14th Asian Tour title of his career at the Worldwide Holdings Selangor Masters.
With this win, he also became the only player to record multiple victories on the Asian Tour during the 2012 golf season. Wiratchant got off to a solid start, as he carded two back-to-back birdies on the first two holes that he played.
A couple of more birdies on the fifth and seventh hole cemented his position on top of the leaderboard.
He then conceded a couple of drop shots on the 9th and 10th hole, prior to adding his last two birdies of the day on the 12th and 13th hole.
At the end of the tournament, he settled for a 16-under par overall score, three shots better than his closest contender, Gaganjeet Bhullar.
Michael Tran, Siddikur Rahman and Javi Colomo shared the third position, all of whom posted a 12-under par tournament score.
“The first time I joined the Asian Tour, I couldn’t make the cut. I never thought I would come this far. After I won my first title (1996 Sabah Masters in Malaysia), I thought I could win more and I kept practising more and more to make myself better,” said
Thaworn.
“I practice too much. I wake up at 5.20 every morning, my wife will ask me ‘Where are you going?’ I will go to the golf course and then come back at 8.10 and at 9, I’ll go out to the course again. I like doing so, I like to play golf. If I don’t play golf
or practice, I get very tired,” he added.
The victory also moved him to the second place in the Asian Tour’s career earnings. He now trails Thongchai Jaidee by over US$1 million in the earnings list.
However, he surpassed him in the number of career wins on the tour, as Jaidee has recorded only 13 titles so far in his career.
Wiratchant now eyes another good finish, heading into this week’s Yeangder Tournament Players Championship in Chinese Taipei.
He is currently considered as the hottest favourite for a win because of his stunning form on the tour.
