Thaworn Wiratchant receives family support at the Thailand Golf Championship
Thaworn Wiratchant of Thailand believes that his wife’s presence at the Amata Spring Country Club will boost his morale, when he tees off this week at the Thailand Golf Championship.
The tournament will be played from December 6 to 9, 2012, featuring a number of top-notch players from different parts of the world.
Talking to the Asian Tour’s official website on Wednesday, the Thai star revealed that his wife will be visiting the course to watch him play in the opening round of the second-last event on the Asian Tour roster.
“My wife will come for the first round tomorrow. I’m not sure why as she normally doesn’t come. Hopefully she’ll come and give me some good luck. I think she’ll probably just stay around the 18th green,” said Thaworn.
He also admitted that he will have to play really well, in a bid to contend strongly against some of the best players, who have committed to play in this year’s edition of the tournament.
The US$1 million event has reeled in some prominent names, including the likes of the 2011 Masters champion Charl Schwartzel, the winner of last week’s King’s Cup, Arnond Vongvanij, the 2011 Open champion Darren Clarke and the Japanese star Ryo Ishikawa.
“For me, if I can make the cut first and finish top-20, I’ll be happy. The course is very difficult for me,” Wiratchant said.
He also said that it will be really difficult to score low, because of the toughness of the course. According to him, the thickness of the roughs and the length of the course will create difficulties for the participants.
“The golf course is too long and soft. The rough is difficult. Yesterday, I hit into the rough on about five to six occasions and could only chip out. I need to plan for my tee shots to be good,” he said.
For the first two rounds, he will be paired with the defending champion Lee Westwood and Japan Golf Tour’s number one Hiroyuki Fujita.
Jbe Kruger and Gaganjeet Bhullar, who currently hold the third and the fourth spot, respectively, in the Asian Tour Order of Merit, will try to record big finishes, in a bid to challenge Wiratchant on the top.
