Thaworn Wiratchant trails Charl Schwartzel by nine strokes at the Thailand Golf Championship
Thaworn Wiratchant of Thailand carded a two-under par 70, in the second round of the Thailand Golf Championship, to finish nine strokes behind the pace set by Charl Schwartzel, at a 14-under par two-round score.
Wiratchant, who currently leads the Asian Tour Order of Merit, traded three birdies against a lone bogey to accumulate a two-round total of a five-under par 139.
Entering the last two rounds on the weekend, he was sharing the ninth position with the defending champion Lee Westwood, Darren Beck, Jbe Kruger and Anirban Lahiri.
Talking to the Asian Tour’s official website, he expressed his disappointment in playing poorly with his driver. Yet, he was able to post an under-par score, thanks to his superb short-game technique.
“My driver was not good. I had many bad tee shots. But my short game was good again,” said Thaworn, who has won three titles this season.
Starting on the back nine of the course, the Thai star got off to a confident start, as he carded birdies on the 11th, 13th and the 15th hole.
Thereafter he parred each of the next five holes that he played, prior to the inclement weather forced the game to be suspended.
Following a one-hour suspension, the game resumed and Wiratchant returned to the course to complete his round. He then conceded a bogey on the third hole, followed by a run of six par putts in a row.
He said that he was unable to read the greens well, after the heavy rain showers changed the playing conditions in Bangkok.
“After we started I bogeyed (third hole)! After the rain, the greens were slightly slower so it was hard to predict how hard we needed to putt. I’m happy with my score. I’m not thinking at the leaderboard at the moment. I want to concentrate on my own game,”
he said.
He also said that winning the tournament was his last goal, entering the second last event of the 2012 Asian Tour season.
“Somehow I don’t feel that I have a chance of winning on this golf course because it is playing long and difficult,” he said.
