Thaworn Wiratchant upbeat to defend his title at the Queen’s Cup – Golf news
Thaworn Wiratchant has set his sights on successfully defending his title at the Queen’s Cup, when he tees off this week at the Santiburi Samui Country Club, on Thursday, May 23, 2013.
The Queen’s Cup is known for featuring a strong line-up each season. This year too, the tournament has reeled in some prominent names, including the likes of Singapore’s Mardan Mamat, India’s Jyoti Randhawa and the youngest winner on the Asian Tour, Chinnarat
Phadungsil.
Wiratchant, who enjoyed a great season last year and became the oldest winner of the Asian Tour Order of Merit, relished the opportunity to return to the one of the renowned tournaments on the PGA Tour.
“It’s always an honour for me to play in the Queen’s Cup,” said the 46-year-old. “Besides the prestige, the Queen’s Cup also gives me the opportunity to play at home and in front of the local crowd. It’s always a good feeling to return to defend your title
and I’m looking forward to the strong challenge again.”
Chinnarat Phadungsil, who became the youngest player on the Asian Tour in 2005, is also returning to the field of the Queen’s Cup, in a bid to add another Asian Tour title to his resume.
Since winning the 2005 Double A International Open as an amateur, he has been outstanding with his game throughout his professional career.
In 2006, the Thai star won the Crown Plaza Open as his second victory on the tour. The year 2009 witnessed him winning the Queen's Cup. That is the reason why he is so confident about his chances of finishing at the top of the leaderboard this season.
“It has been a long time since I last won. I’ve been in contention on several occasions this season and I just couldn’t finish it off the way that I had wanted to. But I’ll keep pressing on and hopefully I’ll be able to win again,” said Chinnarat.
Danny Chia is another strong addition to the tournament this year. He is among the star performers on the Asian Tour in the past few years. So far in his career, the Malaysian star has managed to add eight Asian Tour titles to his resume.
