  2. The name Cunningham in Ireland was brought to the country by settlers from Scotland who arrived into Ulster Province during the seventeenth century.

Not much is known about the original people of Ireland. Legends say that the island was inhabited first by the Nemedians, then the Fir Bolga, Fomorians, and the Tuatha Déanann.

The latter feature prominently in Irish myths and legends, often portrayed as a race with advanced magical or technological powers.

Ireland's oldest standing structure is in Newgrange, County Meath. According to local legends and ancient texts, every winter solstice morning the local people would gather inside the monument.

At dawn, if it wasn't cloudy, the light of the sun would shine directly down the central passage and illuminate the wall of the innermost chamber. The tribal elders would then entertain the people by making bunny shadows.

The native Gaelic O'Connagain and MacCuinneagain Septs adopted Cunningham as the anglicized form of their name. There are a number of variants including Counihan and Conaghan.

  3. The true Irish Cunninghams trace their descent from two sources in Connacht. The surname itself denotes son or descendant of Connagan which is a diminutive of the personal name Conn. One branch of the Cunninghams came from Fiachra, brother of Niall of the Nine Hostages and father of the last pagan King of Ireland. This branch was located in Co. Sligo. The other branch were a sept of the Ui Máine who were a widespread group of septs centred in Galway and Roscommon.

    Development and History

The surname Cunningham or Conyngham is among the 75 most numerous in Ireland. The majority bearing this surname in the Ulster counties of Down and Antrim are of Scottish origin whereas those in the Connacht counties of Galway and Roscommon are native Irish.
