The 1970s limelight and the top ten golfers (part 2)
Every decade there is a certain pack of golfers that stay in the limelight for a long time. The era of 1970s has ten of them, which is also considered to be the official modern beginning of the PGA tour.
These players make the top ten golfers of the 1970s list because of their amazing golfing styles and uncountable victories.
The bottom five of this pack are Billy Casper, who held his last victory at the NBC New Orleans Open in the year 1975, Tom Weiskopf with his hot temper and 11 victories, Dave Stockton the captain of the 1991 Ryder Cup Team, Hubert green with his crouched
over putting style and the evergreen Hale Irwin with 45 victories.
The Desert Fox:
At number 5 of the top ten 1970 golfers, Johnny Miller is known to be a man who came, saw, conquered and left. History tells that Miller was known as the Desert Fox due to his wins at the desert tournaments. Miller earned 18 victories in the 1970s era and
hence the limelight. It is told that Miller played his desert tournaments by carding extremely low scores with iron accuracy.
He won the US Open in the year 1973 and played a low of 63. His last round score at Oakmont pushed him to the top position in an instant. He also holds the victory of the 1976 British open.
Player of the year-s:
Moving up the 1970s limelight, Tom Watson holds 22 wins. These wins are calculated in a time span of 6 years in the 1970s. His successful era started from the year 1974 from the Western Open. The particular time period witnessed Watson claiming 3 Major Championships
and 2 British Opens. He has played a total of five British Open events and won the 1975 and 1977 Open. Watson also won the 1977 Masters.
After that Watson charged the 70s further with his 8 Major championships. He advanced with 39 PGA Tour titles. He was labeled as the player of the year 6 times, which was three times in the 1970s.
Grand Slam:
At position number three, Gary Player stands tall with his 11 wins but 4 Major Championships. The golfer shinned in the 1970s with his countless victories specially the 1972 PGA win. He is the winner of the 1974 Masters as well as the Masters. He played
his first major championship in 1959 British Open while his last major championship had been the 1974 British open.
Player is one of those golfers who won the career grand slam. He is also the winner of the 1978 masters.
A serious golf for Trevino:
Lee Trevino stands as the runner up in our top ten. Although, he looked like a player who was always having fun, but golf to him was all business. He tied himself with Tom Watson for the most number of PGA Tour titles with 22 and then tied with Gary Player
for the 4 major wins.
This serious golfer won the 1971 U.S. Open and the 1971 British open. Trevino also won the 1972 British Open as well as the 1974 PGA.
He recorded his last PGA Tour win as well as the last major was in 1984. Overall this golfer has won 6 Majors.
The # 1:
It won’t surprise many critics and masses altogether when Jack Nicklaus is given the 1970s limelight. He was the number one player in the 1970s, holding 38 titles along with 7 Majors.
This golfer is the winner of the 1970 British Open, the 1971 PGA, the 1972 U.S. Open as well as the 1972 Masters. Nicklaus continued his year by year victory and won the 1973 PGA too. He further won the 1975 Masters as well as the 1975 PGA. As if this wasn’t
enough, the golfer also won the 1978 British Open. His major competitors had been Arnold palmer and Gary Player, who made the 1970s a highly prolific year overall.
