-The 1987 Twins only went 85-77

-They scored 786 runs, but gave up 806

-Kirby Puckett was their only All-Star

-They defeated the league best Tigers(98-64) in 5 games in the ALCS

-They trailed the Cardinals in the WS 3-2, trailed 4-2 in game 6 and won, trailed 2-1 in game 7 and ended up winning

Most people talk about the 2004 Red Sox, the 2001 D-Backs, and the 1990 Reds as the biggest upset in modern day baseball, but I give that title to the '87 Twins. Agree?

  1. The Twins are right up there with the other teams. The Red Sox were not even that big of an upset in general, it was just the ALCS in which they were down 3 games to 0.

In 2001 the DBacks had a .568 win %, and they beat the Yankees who had a .594 win %. That is understandable, but the real upset in this season was that the Mariners had 116 wins, and choked massively in the playoffs, allowing the much worse Yankees to beat them, but then the Yankees went on to allow an even worse team to beat them!

  2. 1969 Mets

  3. Hmm. That is a very good upset. I have to agree with you. Then again i don enough about baseballs history to judge.

Thanks for bringing this up though. It shows that miricles happin in sports. It shows that the underdog always has a chance. It shows that the best team in baseball cann allways be beated, including the 2008 angels.

  4. NO. The Twinkies got lucky and they SUCK BAD.

  5. the 2006 cardinlas only wrnt 82-79 and won series! you are wrong!

  6. Actually It was the Florida Marlins of 1997 and 2003, Ruined the chances of thhe Best in baseball, like the Giants, Braves, Cubs, Indians and Yankees, so Its the Least Popular gets the Greatest Upset in Baseball History.

  7. What about the 1973 Mets? They were in last place in late August, but they rallied back to win the division by winning 82 games. They then advanced to the NLCS where they were total underdogs agaisnt the Big Red Machine. They beat the Big Red Machine and adavanced to the World Series, where they were supost to get swept. They took the series to 7 games but lost. I think that deserves to but up there with the biggest upsets in MLB history. Maybe not #1 but deffinatly in the top 5.
