Sporting Lisbon’s Matías Fernandez claims that the 2-0 win over Famalicao in the Portuguese Cup is a good result for the side. The Lions travelled to Estádio Municipal 22 de Junho on the 15th of October and emerged with a relatively easy three
points.
Domingos Paciência’s men were already labeled as favourites going into the match and they exposed the difference in quality between the two sides by controlling the tempo of the game for the full ninety minutes.
Although not quite at their full-strength for this one, the Portuguese giants still oozed quality with the likes of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Oguchi-Onyewu-c28332 all in the starting line-up.
From start to finish, Sporting were able to keep a firm grip on proceedings and hardly allowed their opponents to touch the ball. In the first half, the visitors were able to apply a lot of pressure but unluckily they did not get on the score-sheet.
The closest they got to breaking the deadlock was through, Andre http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Santos-c32532, whose ferocious effort struck the cross-bar in the 17th minute.
After the break, Paciência was forced to make substitutions as his centre-back pairing of Oguchi Onyewu and Andre Carriço both had to be withdrawn due to injury.
However despite the setback, it was the Sportinguistas who struck first blood through a penalty on the 62 minute.
Matias Fernandez was blatantly fouled in the box by Palheiras and the ensuing spot-kick was calmly converted by the in-form Ricky van Wolfswinkel.
The Dutch International has been scoring goals left, right and centre for the Lisbon outfit and continued his fine streak by adding yet another strike in the 67th minute.
After the home side went down to 10-men, Sporting duly capitalized on their numerical superiority and made it 2-0 with Van Wolfswinkel’s well-taken header from a Pereirinha cross.
With comfortably earned victory away from home, Matias Fernandez was rightfully buzzing after the match and said that the result was definitely a good one.
"It was a short victory but I’m glad that were able to win," he said.
The midfielder also reiterated that the spot-kick was the moment which changed the course of the game and gave his side the initiative to gain three points.
"Indeed, for us the turning point of the game was the penalty. Which helped us win the complicated match," Matias Fernandez was quoted as saying.
With a great of form, stretching back almost seven games now, Sporting Lisbon are looking like genuine title contenders this season.
