The 70's Steelers and the First Decade of the Century Patiots BOTH are undeniably dominant dynasty's. The truly IRONIC thing is that BOTH TEAMS BEST YEAR did not produce a Superbowl Title.
The 76 Steelers
After a slow start, the 76 Steelers reared their Mighty head as the single Greatest Defensive unit in the History of the game. At no point during their entire dynasty had the defense played so Terrifying as they did in 1976. NO ONE could stop them! At their best, if opposing teams scored more than 3 points it was like hitting the lottery. For a while scoring 0 against them was the most likely Doom of an opponent. Truthfully, many teams only hoped to finish the game without suffering too many injuries against these TERRIFYING MONSTERS...........BUT, prior to the Championship Game BOTH RUNNING BACKS WENT DOWN!!!!......Even completely crippled, the Men of Steel ALMOST had an opportunity to win what ultimately would have been their 3rd consecutive Superbowl. Had they won that, they would have won 5 Superbowls in 6 years! And 76 was by far this great dynastys most dominant year.
The 2007 Patriots
This one hardly needs a recap. We all have it VERY CLEAR in our minds what happened last season. The Patriots were totally unstopable the ENTIRE SEASON. The NFL Network's Rich Eisen at one point reffered to it as New England's "Scorched Earth" Season. And that's EXACTLY the best way to desribe it. The Patriots were like Medieval Warlords crushing opposing villiages and leaving nothing but charred decimation in their wake. Offensively, we had NEVER seen anything like it. They went a perfect 18 and 0 leading up to the Superbowl............BUT, In the final 2 minutes of the Superbowl IT ALL SLIPPED AWAY.
So how ironic is this? Here we have arguably the single Greatest Defense of All Time in the 76 Steelers. Here we also have arguably the single Greatest Offense of All Time in the 2007 Patriots. NEITHER OF THEM went on to win the Superbowl in their respective years!
If THESE 2 GREAT "Shoud've Wons" played each other. Who would win?
