The 2012 Asian Tour season, a memorable year for Thaworn Wiratchant
The 2012 Asian Tour season finally came to an end after the Iskandar Johor Open finished last week. In the meantime, it also marked another successful year for the Thai veteran Thaworn Wiratchant.
Wiratchant will be remembered for his age-defying heroics in 2012. At the age of 45, he won three Asian Tour events in 2012, to increase his winning tally to 15.
In addition to that, he also became the only player in the history of the Asian Tour to reach that mark. His compatriot Thongchai Jaidee holds the second position in the list – he has won 13 Asian Tour events in his career.
The 2012 Asian Tour season also witnessed him becoming the oldest winner of the Asian Tour Order of Merit, after he topped the money list, courtesy of his victories at the Queen’s Cup, the Worldwide Holdings Selangor Masters and the Hero Indian Open.
His heroics also propelled him to the 69th position in the Official World Golf Rankings. He now plans to make another strong charge in the rankings, in a bid to make it into the top-50 in the standings.
If he succeeds in achieving his goal, prior to the start of the Masters Tournament, he will secure his place in the first major golf championship of the 2013 golf season.
Talking to the Asian Tour’s official website, he said that it was all hard work that allowed him to spend a successful year, even at the age of 45.
“This is the result of hard work,” said Thaworn, who has a routine of waking up early in the morning to practice his short game. “There are new players coming in and I’m getting older. That’s not an excuse but I definitely tried harder this time. I never
thought I could win the Order of Merit at this age”.
He added, “Every day I spend time training and I only spend time with my family on Sunday. I love golf a lot. When I stay at home, I practice more than when I play in a tournament. I want to thank the Asian Tour, officials and players (for my success)”.
