The 2012 Emirates Melbourne Cup; a true landmark in British horse racing
The race that is famous for stopping the Australian nation, the Melbourne Cup, managed stopping the British nation too. It took the Great Britain the 152nd running of the race that got them the £4 million Melbourne Cup through, Green Moon.
The race is the richest two-mile handicap in the world, and is open for participation by three-year-old and above thoroughbreds. Not only is the prize money one of the richest, but even the history of the race is nothing less, as it is being held ever since
1861. The profile of the race got further enriched as its 152nd running was no small deal.
On 6th November, 2012, the 2012 Emirates Melbourne Cup was won by a British entry, Green Moon, trained by, Robert Hickmott. The 2012 edition will become one of the most memorable, as it got claimed by a British entry.
The race was honoured by the attendance of the Royal family which was represented by, Charles, the Prince Of Wales, who came along with his wife, Camilla. The cup to the winner was presented by no other than the Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla.
There could have been no other race for the royal family that could have been more pleasing, as it brought to an end one of the longest horse racing drought. Britain could not win in 151 editions of the race.
A sad and sweet emotional experience it was for the former trainer of the winner, Harry Dunlop. Just when Green Moon’s trainer switched to, Robert Hickmott, the amazing racing icon struck the most phenomenal land mark of his career.
"There are mixed emotions, but it's great to be associated with a very good horse," Dunlop told BBC Sport.
"I've got a lot of messages and, of course, you wish it was your name by the winning podium, "But he served me very well. We had a lot of fun with him. He was probably one of the best horses I've ever trained."
"He was always going to be sold. It would have been wonderful if someone had kept him racing with me but he's obviously really suited Australia and the warmth. He's been given the time to mature and strengthen which is what he always wanted."
