The 2012 FIVB Beach Volleyball Season to be kicked off with Brasilia Open
The Federation International de Volleyball (FIVB) has confirmed on Wednesday that regular season of beach volleyball will take centre stage with the advent of Brasilia Open in the Brazilian capital from April 16 to 22.
This will mark third straight year that the sandy beaches of Brasilia will get the privilege to host the World Tour Opener. The city located in the Central West region of Brazil has served as a wonderful host to athletes and beach volleyball enthusiasts
since 2009. The FIVB did not take long to decide that Brasilia is the best place to organise the first international event of the year.
The 2012 edition of the Brasilia Open tournament will feature both men’s and women’s competitions. The women’s tournament at the Brasilia will cover its length from April 16-21, while men’s competition will be completed from April 17-22.
There will be a difference one day between men’s and women’s events but the competition formula and format will remain unchanged. Both tournaments will be opened with the Country Quota Playoffs, which will be followed by the Qualification Tournament.
The successful teams of Qualification Tournament and other high-ranked teams will enter the 32-team Main Draw, which will be played with single elimination bracket. In the first place, top 16 teams of the competition will be finalised via Main Draw. Following
the same pattern, the Main Draw stage will progress and half of the teams will be eliminated in the next run. Next up, the best eight duos in both women’s and men’s sections will contest their game skills in front of the international audience.
Eventually, the tournament will enter the most influential “Final Four” stage, where the top four teams of the world will come into the limelight. The Final Four stage will feature semi-finals, winners of which will advance to the final showdown of the Brasilia
Open. Likewise, the losers of semi-finals will come vie for the third position in the tournament.
In the women’s category, Brazilian native Juliana Felisberta Silva and Larissa Franca will defend the title as they defeated American duo of Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh, last year.
On the other hand, men’s pairing of Todd Rogers and Phil Dalhausser will enter the 2012 Brasilia Open as the defending champions. They defeated Brazil’s Emanuel Rego and Alison Cerutti in the previous edition of the competition.
Let’s wait and see which teams come on top at the upcoming event of Brasilia Open.
