The 2012 SWATCH FIVB World Tour set to kick off in April – Volleyball news
The 2012 SWATCH FIVB World Tour is scheduled to take centre stage in April.
A total of 13 events will be covered on the 2012 FIVB SWATCH World Tour. 14 countries of the world will get the chance to set up the field of play for the amazing beach volleyball competitions. According to the set plan of the Federation International de
Volleyball (FIVB), the tour will complete its length over a period of seven months.
The SWATCH FIVB World Tour is the international beach volleyball competition, which is organised annually. The Federation International de Volleyball (FIVB) is the governing authority of competition. The SWATCH World Tour dates back to 1987 and it features
both men’s and women’s tournaments.
The 2012 SWATCH Tour will feature record-breaking eight Grand Slam competitions. The number of Grand Slam tournaments has increased this year as the previous edition of SWATCH FIVB World Tour featured only six Grand Slams. The ConocoPhillips Grand Slam in
Stavanger, Norway was part of the 2011 tour but is has been removed from the list this year due to the financial crises in host country. In addition to the Grand Slam Tournaments, eight Open events will be covered in the running season. Six of the Open events
will be single-gender tournaments, while two will feature both men’s and women’s competitions.
Total prize money of $6.7 million will be on stake for the winners of the tournaments on SWATCH World Tour. Each of the Grand Slam competitions will offer $600,000 prize money to the successful teams. The Grand Slam will be held in Beijing, Moscow, Rome,
Gstaad, Klagenfurt, Stare Jablonki, and in Shanghai, China.
The 2012 SWATCH FIVB World Tour has extreme importance as it will offer the Olympic berths to 16 teams per gender. A total of 32 men’s and women’s tandems will qualify for the 2012 London Olympic Games directly from the World Tour.
The Brasilia Open in Brazil will be the first tournament of the 2012 SWATCH World Tour. It will take place from April 17-23 and both women’s and men’s matches will be features. The tour will be closed with Phuket Open in Thailand, which will cover its length
from November 1-6, 2012.
