The 2012 WOVD Intercontinental Cup slated for March – Volleyball news
The 2012 World Organisation Volleyball for Disabled (WOVD) Intercontinental Cup is scheduled to take place from March 3 to 9 in Cairo, Egypt.
According to the plan, the tournament will feature both men’s and women’s competitions. A total of 16 men’s teams will join the Sitting Volleyball Tournament, while 12 female squads will enter the respective women’s sitting volleyball tournament.
The World organisation for Volleyball Disabled (WOVD) recently hired the services of Australian Barry Couzner as Technical Delegate as well as appointed Jenni Cole and Stephen Giugni as Classifier and Referee for the Intercontinental Cup.
The Intercontinental Cup will create an excellent opportunity for the national Sitting Volleyball teams, in order to qualify for the 2012 London Paralympics. The highest placed men’s team will earn the ticket to London Games.
The famous Cairo Stadium will host the tournament, where four courts will be installed for the competition. For those who may have concerns about the recent political scenario in the country, they should know that it is safe to travel to Egypt now. The political
distress has ended. Moreover, the Cairo Stadium and hotels are near to the airport. The visiting teams and their delegates will be provided with sufficient security.
In addition to the Sitting Volleyball Tournaments, a Standing Beach Volleyball Competition is also set to take centre stage at the Intercontinental Cup. The Australian beach volleyball team will also compete in the Standing Beach Volleyball contest. The
team from the “Land Down Under” is quite new at Standing Beach Volleyball as they competed in our first international event last September in Malaysia.
The Volleyball Australia has high hopes that the Aussie team will do well at the tournament. In the long run, the Volleyball Australia plans to organise an Australian Standing Beach Volleyball Championship on its own ground.
The president of Egyptian Paralympic Committee, Professor Ashraf Eid Marie and President of WOVD, are optimistic about the upcoming Intercontinental event. They have also urged the nation to support the Egyptian Paralympic Committee as they will have a daunting
task to set up the arrangement for the event.
