The 24-year-old Daniel Martin to lead his team in Vuelta a Espana – Cycling News
Daniel Martin of team Garmin-Cervelo is currently at the 20th position on the UCI World Tour Standings is all pumped up for Vuelta a Espana, 2011 starting in few days as he will be leading the squad through to the Vuelta.
Martin shared his views about the Vuelta as he mentioned that he is in good form and he is going to attack in the first week and stage wins is his first target and he will than go for the general classifications from there.
Jonathan Vaughters who is the general manager and directeur sportif of team Garmin Cervelo has shown his confidence in him as Martin said, “Jonathan has said to me that it would be interesting to see what I could do on GC and I’m going into it with a focus
of doing as well as I can,” he further added. “I’m just going to try and do both, but I’ve not really thought too much about ambitions. If my form is good I’ll be near the front.”
The 24-year-old is in a good shape for overall win in the grand tour as he stated that he will be happy with a place in top ten positions and will mainly target the stage wins as he has never raced for the general classifications in a grand tour before.
Danielson has raced in the grand tours twice before as he raced the Vuelta in 2009 and Giro d’ Italia in 2010 and admitted that he prefers to ride in grand tours as most of the difficult stages are held in the second week and this format suits him more.
Thor Hushovd had been left out of the team Garmin for Vuelta a Espana which has left the Norwegian disappointed as he said, “I am disappointed and surprised, you cannot do this to the world champion. It’s very strange that they do this.”
Team Garmin Cervelo has not yet announced the full list of cyclists to participate in the Vuelta but the main GC contenders for the team will be Heinrich Haussler and Dan Martin with Thor Hushovd out of the Vuelta squad.
