  1. I guess it depends on what you're trying to teach! I recently did this to teach/work on phonological awareness. I read the book The Three Billy Goats Gruff/Just a Friendly Old Troll (Another Point of View). They talked about characteristics of the troll.

Then I told the children that the Troll loves to give presents to kids, except when he gets so excited he says it funny! For example, if he wanted to give the child a bike, he would b -i - k. or If he wanted to give a cat, c-a-t. This works on blending phonemes of each word, which helps with learning to read and phonics later on!

After telling the child what present the troll gives him/her in the funny 'accent' they select a matching picture card! Then the kids can take turns pretending to be the troll, and sounding out the words phoneme by phoneme! There should be no words on the cards, as this is only an oral lesson!

  2. have them make paper bag puppetts and have them act out the lesson with the puppets

  3. You should be the narrator and tell the story.  Meanwhile, kids get to act it out.  They love stomping across the bridge.  It's great if you have a piece of wood to lay on the ground so it is really loud when they stomp.  Making masks out of paper plates is fun for them too.  If you think some students can handle it, they can have some "small lines" to say, like "who is crossing my bridge??"

Another idea is to turn it into a felt board story. cover a large piece of cardboard in felt.  Cut out a troll, some goats etc out of felt and they magically stick to the felt board. You can take characters on and off and move them around as you tell the story.  Kids LOVE felt board stories for some reason!!

  4. in the 1st grade i did that! my teacher had us read the story first (very small of course). then we each chose which one we wanted to be. then, make little masks on them made from paper plates which they can make them selves ( u can help cut eyeholes and stuff) then u can hold a little play! its pretty cool course i kinda forget now. hope i helped!

  5. Huh?  i guess i am not from this century,,,never heard of them....
